Emergency Surgery - A Matter of Life or Death

Meet Golfo and his family. This eleven year old, belonging to the Klein family was brought into Care Animal Hospital on August 10, 2009 as an emergency. He was painful and distressed with a history of having  possibly swallowed a whole rawhide bone.  X-rays were taken and showed Gastric dilatation-volvulus, often referred to as “bloat.”

Bloat is a life-threatening condition that most commonly affects deep-chested breeds of dogs over two years of age. Even with treatment, as many as 25% of dogs who develop GDV die.

Care Animal Hospital had Golfo anesthetized and prepared for surgery in twenty minutes. At surgery, a 15 inch incision opened his   abdomen and exposed a stomach the size of a basketball-filled with air, food, and a large rawhide chew. His stomach was untwisted and sutured to the abdomen wall to prevent it from rotating again. After two hours of hard work by Dr Alcorn, surgeon, and the Care Animal Hospital staff, Golfo was out of life-threatening danger.

After two days in the hospital for supportive care and monitoring, he was released to his owners. The couple had arrived in Temecula as new residents two weeks prior to the event. They had experienced “bloat” with another pet years before and unfortunately that pet died from the serious problem.

Care Animal Hospital was  proud to provide the immediate emergency surgery and nursing care needed for Golfo to survive and return to his happy owners.

Weeks after his surgery, Golfo is completely back to normal. He is an alert and playful dog with no issues. Thanks to the speedy response of his owners and the surgery and supportive care at Care Animal Hospital, Golfo is thriving.

We at Care Animal Hospital are here to provide you and your pets with high quality medical and surgical care, or “Exceptional Care for the Ones You Love.”

Sincerely,

Dr. Joe Alcorn  M.S., DVM
